UNIX is God

Old religions and the priestly hierarchies who largely administer them still propagate the notion that religion is somehow otherworldly.

A new crop of theorists and art, though, begins to get at the miraculous of the now, none the least of which is Lee Smolin from Canada’s Perimeter Institute in Waterloo who argues, time is not illusory, laws of physics in the universe are not immutable but evolve, so that there are no eternal truths, religious or otherwise.

This steeps the mundane world with the value of any and all religions, and infuses each and every one of our waking decisions with gravitas.

The bankrupt notion of commercialism – throwaway trash culture, becomes indefensible.

This is where our computer software comes into the picture.

As I have argued in the past – and because of my ten years of technical writing – I have seen and experienced how closed commercial software is dangerous.

This extends from all the way from design software to Facebook and what the NSA is doing.

Now you have countries trying to shut down the Internet – at least within their borders – and a proprietary newsfeed dwarfing the power of all journalistic institutions in the world (with its makeup a secret).

Moreover, most of the world’s computers are still run on a closed proprietary buggy operating system named Microsoft Windows.

While theorists theorize, time, as Smolin says, goes on for real.

Now, imagine instead of relying on cryptic texts from two thousand years ago, and the word of a priestly hierarchy that has otherwise economic, political, and institutional motivations, you could simply type:

root@MTLTechWriter:/etc/nginx# earth history 1205-1256

Then get a detailed history. Not Wikipedia, but a definitive history, much like a Docker container:

root@MTLTechWriter:/etc/nginx# docker history 272

Now that’s Responsa. Stay tuned as Windows and OSX slowly fade away. Long live UNIX and its Linux brethren.
